What should I know about battery backup and safety upgrades in the Highlands, Moray and Islands?

  • After fitting, the door is tested to check it stops and reverses as it should with the new devices.
  • We check your motor and control box are compatible with the upgrade before the visit is booked, not on the day.
  • The battery charges from the mains while the power is on, so it's ready the next time there's a power cut.
  • A battery backup unit lets the door run for a limited number of cycles when the mains power is off.

Rules that apply in Scotland

Powered door safety

Every powered door we fit is commissioned with force testing to BS EN 12453 and handed over with a Declaration of Conformity and UKCA or CE marking, as the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008 require.

Electrics

An electric door needs a power supply near the roller box. Part P does not apply in Scotland, but electrical work must meet BS 7671 and the Scottish building standards where it forms part of building work.

Questions about battery backup and safety upgrades in the Highlands, Moray and Islands

Can I get a price without anyone visiting?

Yes. The guide price tool takes four steps and gives a range for your opening and door type, or the visit price for a repair. It is a guide, not a quote: the written quote comes after the survey or once the visit price is agreed.

Are guide prices the same across the Highlands, Moray and Islands?

Yes for the door and visit prices. Travel to Fort William, Stornoway, Kirkwall, Thurso, Wick, Lerwick and Portree is priced individually and shown in writing before you agree to anything.

How do I book a visit in the Highlands, Moray and Islands?

Tell us what the door is doing using the form on this page, by phone or on WhatsApp. We confirm the visit price before anyone comes out, then confirm the date in writing. Travel to Fort William, Stornoway, Kirkwall, Thurso, Wick, Lerwick and Portree is priced individually and confirmed in writing before booking.

Do I still need the manual override if I have a battery backup?

Yes. A battery unit covers a limited number of cycles, and it can run down during a long power cut or as the battery ages. Keep the override handle somewhere you can find it in the dark, and make sure everyone who uses the garage knows where it is and how it works.

How often should I test the safety edge and photocells?

Test them monthly, following the manufacturer's instructions for your door. The aim is to confirm that the door stops or reverses when the safety edge meets an obstruction, and won't close while the photocell beam is broken. If either test fails, don't keep using the door until it has been checked, and request a visit.
