Security-rated roller garage doors

A security-rated roller garage door is a door model that its manufacturer has had tested and certificated for resistance to forced entry, for example to LPS 1175, STS 202 or Secured by Design product approval. The rating belongs to that specific model, not to roller doors in general. The security-rated doors in our price list are insulated and electric, and we show you the certificate before you order.

What does LPS 1175 mean on a roller garage door?

LPS 1175 is a standard for testing how long a door resists a forced-entry attack, and under Issue 8 its rating is shown as a letter for the threat level and a number for the minutes of delay.

The letter runs from A to H and reflects the level of attack the door was tested against, with later letters meaning a more serious threat. The number shows the minutes of delay the door achieved: 1, 3, 5, 10, 15 or 20. So a rating such as A1, B3 or C5 tells you both the kind of attack tested and how long the door held out.

STS 202 is another standard for burglary resistance, and Secured by Design product approval is a separate scheme for products. Each applies to a specific manufacturer's model, not to a type of door in general. Our guide to roller garage door security ratings explains them in more depth.

How can I check a roller door's security rating is genuine?

Ask to see the certificate for the exact door model you're being quoted for, and check that the model name on it matches the one in your written quote.

A rating belongs to the model that was tested, so a certificate for a different door from the same manufacturer, or a general claim that a door is 'high security', doesn't tell you much. Where a model is certificated to LPS 1175, we'll show you the certificate for that exact model, including the rating it achieved. The same applies to STS 202 and Secured by Design product approval.

It also helps to understand what a rating covers. A tested door is a complete product, including its laths, guides and locking parts, so changes to the specification can matter. If you want extras such as vision laths, ask whether they're covered by the certificate before you order.

How much does a security-rated roller garage door cost?

A security-rated insulated electric roller garage door costs £2,295–£3,495 inc VAT for a single opening up to 2.4 m wide.

  • Wide single, 2.4 to 3.0 m: £2,695–£3,995 inc VAT
  • Double, 3.0 to 4.0 m: £3,195–£4,695 inc VAT
  • Wide double, 4.0 to 5.5 m: £3,795–£5,495 inc VAT

Each price includes the rated door and motor, fitting, commissioning, and the removal and disposal of your old roller or up-and-over door, with VAT at 20%. Battery backup adds £149–£279 inc VAT and keeps the door working for a limited number of cycles in a power cut.

Compare these bands with standard insulated doors on our prices page to see what the rating adds for your width. Structural work, such as a new lintel, is priced on survey and shown separately.

What else makes a roller garage door harder to break into?

Beyond the door's rating, rolling-code remotes, anti-lift or auto-locking devices and a few good habits all make a roller garage door harder to get past.

  • Rolling-code remotes change their code every time you press the button, which makes the signal much harder to copy.
  • Anti-lift or auto-locking devices, fitted on some motors, resist the curtain being forced upwards from outside.
  • The manual override is best kept somewhere sensible inside, with an external override fitted only where you genuinely need one.
  • Remote fobs are best kept out of sight, with lost ones recoded out of the system promptly.

Some insurers ask about garage security, particularly for integral garages or where valuable items are kept, so check with yours what they expect. We can't promise any change to your premium.

What happens at the survey and fitting of a security-rated door?

The free survey checks that your opening can take the rated door, and fitting day ends with the door commissioned and both its product certificate and commissioning paperwork in your hands.

At the survey we measure the width, height, headroom and side room, and look closely at the lintel and reveals the door will fix to. We check the floor level and the power supply for the motor. Your written quote names the exact model and its rating, and we show you the certificate before you order. The fitting date is confirmed in writing, depending on installer availability.

On the day, the old door is removed and the new door is installed following the manufacturer's instructions. The installer sets the limits, tests the closing force and the safety edge or photocells, and pairs the rolling-code remotes. You're shown the manual override and given the Declaration of Conformity for the powered door.

Questions about security-rated roller garage doors

Will a security-rated garage door lower my home insurance?

We can't promise that. Some insurers ask about garage security, but each one sets its own terms and decides what, if anything, it takes into account. Before choosing a door for insurance reasons, ask your insurer what they would need to see, and keep the product certificate and commissioning paperwork somewhere safe in case they ask for it.

Is a higher LPS 1175 rating always better for a house?

A higher rating means the door resisted a more serious attack for longer in testing, but that doesn't make it the right choice for every home. Think about what the garage connects to, what's stored inside and what your insurer asks for. We'll explain the ratings available on the models we can supply and show you each certificate, so you can decide.

Are security-rated roller doors also insulated?

Yes. The security-rated doors in our price list are insulated electric doors, so you get foam-filled laths that reduce heat loss, draughts and noise as well as tested resistance to forced entry. Insulated laths make a larger roll in the box, though, so the headroom above your opening is checked carefully at survey.

Can my existing roller door be upgraded to a security rating?

No. A rating applies to a complete door model as the manufacturer had it tested, so adding locks or parts to an existing door doesn't make it rated. If you want a certificated door, it has to be a new door of a rated model. Some changes still help, such as recoding lost remotes on a visit that is priced and agreed before we come out.

Does a security-rated roller door have a manual override?

Like most electric roller doors, it normally has a manual override for power cuts, usually an internal crank or winding handle. Where the garage has no other way in, an external override may be possible, though it's worth thinking about where it sits. Battery backup is another option, running the door for a limited number of cycles while the power is off.
