Insulated roller garage doors

An insulated roller garage door is a roller door whose curtain is made of double-skinned aluminium laths filled with polyurethane foam. Compared with single-skin laths, it reduces heat loss, draughts and noise through the garage opening. Like any roller door it coils into a box above the opening, and every insulated door in our price list is electrically operated.

In short

An insulated roller garage door is a roller door whose curtain is made of double-skinned aluminium laths filled with polyurethane foam. Compared with single-skin laths, it reduces heat loss, draughts and noise through the garage opening. Like any roller door it coils into a box above the opening, and every insulated door in our price list is electrically operated.

  • Double-skin aluminium laths with a polyurethane foam core
  • Less heat loss, fewer draughts and less noise than single-skin
  • Lath heights around 55 mm or 77 mm, larger for wider doors
  • Electric operation, commissioned and tested at handover

How much warmer will an insulated roller door keep my garage?

An insulated roller door makes a garage less draughty and slower to lose heat than a single-skin door does, but no one can honestly promise you a set temperature or energy saving.

The polyurethane foam between the two aluminium skins slows the heat passing through the curtain, and the insulated lath also cuts noise from outside. How warm the garage actually feels still depends on its walls, roof, floor, windows and any side door. A garage door also isn't part of your home's insulated envelope, which is why we don't quote U-values or heating savings for it.

If the garage is a workshop, gym, laundry space or a store for things you'd rather keep out of the cold, insulated laths are the sensible starting point. Our page on workshops and home gyms looks at those uses in more detail, including what else affects comfort in a garage you spend time in.

Should I choose 55 mm or 77 mm insulated laths?

The lath size mostly follows the width of your opening: laths of around 55 mm are common on narrower doors, while around 77 mm suits wider doors because the larger lath adds rigidity.

Lath size also affects the size of the box. A larger lath makes a bigger roll when the door is open, so the box needs more depth above the opening. Box sizes for domestic doors are commonly around 205 to 300 mm or more, depending on the door height and the lath.

That matters most when headroom is tight. If there isn't room behind the lintel, the options include a smaller lath where the width allows, a box under the lintel, or a box face-fitted on the outside wall. Our low-headroom roller garage doors page explains each one. We recommend a lath at survey based on width, height and headroom, and the written quote states which one you're getting.

How much does an insulated roller garage door cost?

An insulated electric roller garage door costs £1,495–£2,295 inc VAT for a single opening up to 2.4 m wide, supplied and fitted.

Wider openings are priced in bands:

  • Wide single, 2.4 to 3.0 m: £1,795–£2,795 inc VAT
  • Double, 3.0 to 4.0 m: £2,195–£3,295 inc VAT
  • Wide double, 4.0 to 5.5 m: £2,595–£3,995 inc VAT

Each price includes the door and motor, fitting and commissioning, and the removal and disposal of your existing roller or up-and-over door, with VAT at 20%. Optional extras include battery backup at £149–£279 inc VAT, a wireless keypad at £79–£149 inc VAT and extra remote handsets at £39–£69 inc VAT each. Openings wider than 5.5 m, structural work and colours outside the manufacturer's range are priced on survey.

What happens at the survey and installation of an insulated door?

The free survey confirms the lath size, box position and power supply for your insulated door, and installation day ends with a commissioned door and its paperwork in your hands.

At the survey we measure the opening, the headroom for the box and the side room for the guides, check the lintel and floor level, and look at how power will reach the motor. Because insulated laths make a larger roll than single-skin, headroom gets particular attention. The written quote follows, and your installation date is put in writing once an installer can be scheduled.

On the day, your old door is removed and taken away, then the box, guides, curtain and motor are fitted. The installer sets the limits, tests the safety edge or photocells, and hands over the commissioning paperwork for the powered door, along with the remote handsets and a demonstration of the manual override.

Is an insulated roller door worth it for an integral garage?

For an integral garage, an insulated door is usually worth it, because the garage shares at least one wall, and sometimes a ceiling, with rooms you heat.

A single-skin door lets cold air and outside noise straight into the garage, and from there they reach the walls and internal doors of the rooms next to it. Insulated laths cut the draughts, heat loss and noise coming through the opening, which makes the garage a better buffer between the outside and your living space.

It's also worth thinking about how you'll use the garage over the next few years. If it might become a utility area, a hobby room or somewhere to store things that dislike the cold, choosing insulated laths now saves replacing the door later. For a detached garage used only for parking, single-skin may be all you need.

Questions about insulated roller garage doors

Will an insulated door fit the same opening as my old single-skin door?

Usually, yes, but insulated laths are thicker, so the curtain makes a bigger roll in the box. If your old door had a small box, the new one may need more headroom, a box fitted under the lintel, or a face-fitted box. We check this at survey and explain the trade-offs before you choose.

Can insulation be added to my existing roller door?

Not in a practical way. The foam sits between the two aluminium skins of each lath when it's made, so a single-skin curtain can't simply be filled or lined. Getting insulated laths means a new curtain, and because the box and barrel need to suit the larger roll, that normally means a new door, which we can quote as a replacement.

Is an insulated door more secure than a single-skin one?

Not automatically. Insulation and burglary resistance are separate qualities. How well a door resists attack depends on how that specific manufacturer's model has been tested, for example to LPS 1175 or STS 202. If security is a priority, look at our security-rated doors, which are also insulated, and we'll show you the certificate for the exact model.

Are insulated roller doors available in different colours?

Yes. Insulated doors come in the manufacturer's standard range finishes, and you can choose a RAL colour or a woodgrain effect as a priced extra. Colours outside the manufacturer's range are priced on survey. If you're matching windows or a front door, have the RAL code to hand when you ask for a guide price.

Is an insulated door worth it for a detached garage?

It depends on how you use the garage. If it's only for parking or storing tools, single-skin laths may be enough. If you work out there, store anything that dislikes the cold, or want it quieter, insulated laths are worth the extra cost. Remember the walls, roof and floor also let heat out, so the door is only part of the picture.
