What faults can be repaired on a roller garage door?

Many roller garage door faults can be repaired without replacing the door, from a door that ignores the remote to a curtain that has come out of its guides.

Typical repairs include:

  • a door that doesn't respond to the remotes or the wall switch
  • a door that stops, reverses or won't close, often a safety edge or photocell issue
  • a motor that hums but doesn't turn, or runs and then cuts out
  • limits that have drifted, so the door stops short or doesn't close fully
  • a curtain out of its guide rails, or laths that are dented, split or slipping sideways
  • a worn bottom seal, bent guide rails or loose fixings
  • weak or broken springs on a manual door

We repair electric and manual roller doors of any make, whoever fitted them. We don't repair sectional or up-and-over doors, which keeps every visit focused on the roller door in front of us.

How much does a roller garage door repair cost?

A repair visit costs £119–£169 inc VAT, covering diagnosis and the first 30 minutes of work, and the price is agreed before we come out.

Some faults can be put right within that time, such as realigning photocells, resetting limits, refitting a curtain to its guides or recoding a receiver. If the door needs parts, such as a motor, safety edge, photocells or laths, the engineer explains what's wrong and quotes for the parts and any further time before fitting anything.

You can say no to the parts quote; the visit price you agreed is all you pay for the diagnosis. Common repairs such as motors, safety devices and laths have fixed fitted prices, listed on our prices page. All home prices include VAT at 20%.

What should you check before booking a repair?

A few simple checks are worth making first, because some faults turn out to be a tripped supply or a flat remote battery.

  • Is the power on at the isolator or fused spur, and has a circuit breaker tripped?
  • Does the wall switch or keypad work when the remote doesn't? If so, try a new remote battery.
  • Is anything blocking the photocell beam, or are the lenses dirty?
  • Is there a stone, twig or other debris in the bottom of the guide rails?

Don't force the curtain, open the roller box or adjust springs or limits yourself; the springs in a manual door's barrel hold stored energy. If the door has stopped part-open, keep people and cars clear of it. Our guide to roller garage door problems goes through common symptoms, and the stuck roller door page covers safe checks in more detail.

Is it worth repairing an old roller garage door?

Repairing is worth it when the fault is isolated and the rest of the door is sound; replacement makes more sense when several major parts are worn at once.

A failed motor, a damaged safety edge or a couple of dented laths on an otherwise sound door are normally good value to fix. If the barrel, guides and curtain are all worn, parts for the model are no longer made, or the repair quote approaches the cost of a new door, a replacement is worth comparing.

The engineer will tell you plainly what they find, and the parts quote comes in writing so you can decide in your own time. If a new door looks like the better route, we can arrange a survey and written quote for one, so you can put the two figures side by side. How long a door lasts depends on use, exposure and care, so age alone isn't a reason to replace a door that still works well.

How does a repair visit work?

A repair visit follows four steps: you tell us about the fault, we confirm the visit price, the visit is booked, and any parts are quoted before they're fitted.

  1. Tell us what the door is doing, whether it's electric or manual, and the make if you know it. Photos or a short video of the fault help.
  2. We confirm the visit price in writing before anything is booked.
  3. The visit date depends on engineer availability and is confirmed in writing.
  4. The engineer diagnoses the fault, carries out what can be done within the visit, and quotes for any parts before fitting them.

If parts have to be ordered, a return visit is arranged once they're available, and that date is confirmed in writing too. Before the engineer leaves, the door is run and tested, and any safety devices that were disturbed are checked again.

Questions about roller garage door repairs

Do you repair roller doors you didn't fit?

Yes. We repair electric and manual roller garage doors of any make, whoever fitted them. Tell us what the door is doing and the make of the motor or control box if you know it. That helps us confirm the visit price and, where the likely parts are clear from your description, plan for them before the visit.

Do you repair sectional or up-and-over garage doors?

No. We work on roller garage doors only, so we don't repair sectional or up-and-over doors. If you have an up-and-over door that's failing and you'd like to change it, we can replace it with a roller door; that work starts with a survey and a written quote rather than a repair visit.

What does the repair visit price include?

The repair visit price covers diagnosing the fault and the first 30 minutes of work. If the door can be put right in that time without parts, that's all you pay. If parts or more time are needed, the engineer explains what's wrong and quotes before fitting anything, and you decide whether to go ahead.

Can I keep using my roller door while it's faulty?

If the door is reversing unexpectedly, running unevenly, making grinding noises or has come out of its guides, stop using it until it has been checked. A door with a faulty safety device may not stop when it should. Switch an electric door off at the isolator, keep people, pets and cars clear of a part-open door, and don't force the curtain.

Is there a charge if the door can't be repaired?

The visit price is agreed before we come out and covers diagnosis and the first 30 minutes, so it applies whatever the outcome. If the engineer finds the door isn't worth repairing, they'll explain why, and we can price a new door for you to compare. Nothing else is charged without your agreement.
