Made-to-measure roller garage doors

A made-to-measure roller garage door is a door built to the exact width and height of your opening, with the curtain, guide rails and box sized from measurements we take at survey. Because it's made for your opening instead of being chosen from a handful of stock sizes, it suits older and non-standard garages as well as typical ones, and it can be fitted in more than one position.

Why does a roller garage door need to be made to measure?

A roller garage door needs to be made to measure because the curtain, guides and box have to suit the width, height, headroom and side room of your particular opening.

Garage openings vary more than you might expect. Two houses on the same street can have openings a few centimetres apart in width, with different lintel heights and different amounts of space above the opening. A roller door that's even slightly the wrong size can leave gaps at the sides, rub in the guides or not close evenly on the floor.

Building the door to measured sizes avoids that. It also opens up choices a stock door can't offer, such as a smaller box for tight headroom or a different fitting position when the reveals aren't suitable. If your garage has very little space above the opening, our page on low-headroom roller garage doors explains the options.

How do I measure my garage opening for a guide price?

For a guide price you need four measurements: the width, the height, the headroom above the opening, and the side room either side of it.

  1. Width: measure between the reveals at the top, middle and bottom, and use the smallest figure.
  2. Height: measure from the floor to the underside of the lintel at both sides and in the middle.
  3. Headroom: measure from the underside of the lintel up to the ceiling or the lowest obstruction inside the garage.
  4. Side room: measure the clear wall either side of the opening inside; guides typically need around 75 to 100 mm.

Your figures only need to be close for a guide price. We measure again at the free survey, and the door is built to the survey measurements, not yours. Our step-by-step guide on how to measure for a roller garage door covers the awkward cases.

How much does a made-to-measure roller door cost?

Made-to-measure roller doors are priced by width band, starting at £1,495–£2,295 inc VAT for an insulated electric door on an opening up to 2.4 m wide.

An insulated electric door for a double opening of 3.0 to 4.0 m costs £2,195–£3,295 inc VAT. Manual, single-skin electric, steel and security-rated doors each have their own bands, which you can compare on our prices page. Within a band, the door is still built to your exact sizes.

Every price includes supply, fitting and the removal and disposal of your old roller or up-and-over door, with VAT at 20%. Some things fall outside the bands and are priced on survey:

  • openings wider than 5.5 m
  • steel doors wider than 4 m
  • structural work, such as a new lintel or building out the reveals
  • colours that aren't in the manufacturer's range

What can be adjusted to suit an unusual garage opening?

The fitting position, the position of the box and the size of the lath can all be adjusted to suit an opening that isn't straightforward.

Most doors are fitted behind the opening, with the guides on the inside face of the wall. Where that doesn't work, the door can be fitted between the reveals or face-fixed on the front of the wall. The box can go behind the lintel, which is the usual choice, under the lintel, which reduces the clear opening height, or in front of the wall when there's no room inside.

The lath matters too. Larger laths add rigidity on wider doors but need a bigger box, so the right choice balances width against headroom. Where the reveals are uneven or there isn't enough wall for the guides, they can sometimes be built out. That work is priced on survey and listed separately, so you can see what it adds.

What happens between the survey and fitting of a made-to-measure door?

Your survey measurements become the order: once you accept the written quote, the door is made to those sizes and your fitting date is confirmed in writing.

At the free survey we take the measurements the door will be built to, and check the lintel, floor level, access and, for an electric door, the power supply. The written quote then sets out the door, its sizes, the fitting and box positions, the finish and any extras. Nothing is ordered until you've agreed that quote, so check it carefully. The fitting date depends on installer availability.

On fitting day, the old door is removed and taken away, and the new door is installed in the position set out in your quote. An electric door is commissioned, with its limits set and safety devices tested, and you're shown how to use the manual override.

Questions about made-to-measure roller garage doors

Why might my measurements differ from the surveyor's?

Openings are rarely perfectly square, so width and height often vary by a few millimetres from one point to another. The surveyor measures at several points, checks the floor level and works to the figures the door must fit. Small differences from your own measurements are normal, and the written quote is based on the survey.

Can I choose the finish and extras on a made-to-measure door?

Yes. Alongside the sizes, you can choose the lath type, a RAL colour or woodgrain finish, vision or vent laths, and for electric doors extras such as a wireless keypad, smart app control or battery backup. Each choice is written into your quote with its price, so the door that's ordered matches exactly what you agreed.

Is a made-to-measure door more expensive than a standard size?

Our prices are set in width bands, and the door within each band is built to your measured sizes. The guide price changes when an opening moves into a wider band, or when it needs work beyond the door itself, such as a new lintel or building out the reveals. That extra work is priced on survey and shown on its own line in your written quote.

What if my opening is narrower than a typical garage door?

Narrow openings are fine, because the door is built to your width. Side room is the main thing to check, since each guide rail needs some clear wall beside the opening. If the opening is narrow and you'd like as much clear width as possible, we'll explain how each fitting position affects the space you'll have for the car.

Can I order a made-to-measure door without a survey?

We don't order doors from customer measurements alone. The door is built to sizes taken at our free survey, where we also check the lintel, headroom, floor and power. That way, if the door doesn't fit, getting the sizes right is our job, not yours. Your own measurements are still useful for the online guide price before the survey.
