Roller garage door replacement means taking out an existing roller door, including its box, barrel, curtain and guides, and fitting a complete new door in its place. It's the answer when repairs keep coming back, parts are hard to find, or you want an upgrade such as insulated laths or a motor. We survey free, quote in writing, and remove and dispose of the old door.

  • A complete new door: box, barrel, curtain, guides and controls, not old and new mixed
  • Removal and disposal of the old roller or up-and-over door included in the price
  • A chance to move from single-skin to insulated laths, or from manual to electric
  • Opening measured afresh at the free survey, not copied from the old door

When should you replace a roller garage door rather than repair it?

Replace a roller garage door when a repair would cost a large share of a new door, when the same faults keep returning, or when the door no longer suits how you use the garage.

Signs that replacement is worth pricing:

  • several laths are dented, split or corroded, not just one or two
  • the barrel, box or guide rails are bent or worn
  • the motor has failed and other parts of the door are showing their age
  • the door is single-skin and the garage is now a gym, workshop or utility space you want warmer and quieter
  • replacement parts for the model are no longer available

If it's a single fault on a sound door, a repair is usually better value. Our roller garage door repairs page explains how a repair visit is priced, and at the survey we'll tell you plainly which route makes sense.

What happens to the old door when you replace it?

The old door is taken down and taken away for disposal, and that's included in every door price.

On a roller door, the curtain is lowered and secured, the box and barrel are taken down, and the guide rails come off the wall or reveals. Springs on a manual door hold stored energy, so the fitting team releases them with the proper tools before anything is dismantled. We then check the opening: old fixing holes, the condition of the reveals and lintel, and whether the floor is level where the new bottom rail will sit.

If the old door is an up-and-over, its frame and tracks come out too, unless the frame is sound and worth keeping. That change has its own page on up-and-over to roller door conversion, with the extra checks it involves.

How much does a replacement roller garage door cost?

A replacement roller door costs the same as a new installation, because the price already includes taking out and disposing of your old roller or up-and-over door.

DoorGuide price, fitted
Insulated electric, single opening up to 2.4 m£1,495–£2,295 inc VAT
Single-skin electric, single opening up to 2.4 m£1,195–£1,745 inc VAT
Insulated electric, double opening 3.0–4.0 m£2,195–£3,295 inc VAT
Fused spur from an existing circuit nearby£129–£249 inc VAT

If your old door was electric, the existing power supply may be reusable once it has been checked. Openings wider than 5.5 m, steel doors wider than 4 m, structural work and colours outside the range are priced on survey. Every home price includes VAT at the standard rate.

Should a replacement door be like-for-like or an upgrade?

A replacement is a good moment to upgrade, because the work of removing the old door and fitting a new one is the same whichever door you choose.

The usual upgrades are:

  • Insulated laths: double-skinned aluminium filled with polyurethane foam, which reduces heat loss, draughts and noise compared with single-skin. The door still isn't part of the house's insulated envelope, but it helps if you use the garage as a workspace.
  • Electric operation: a tubular motor in the barrel, with remotes and safety devices, in place of a spring-assisted manual door.
  • Security-rated models: where a manufacturer's door is certificated to LPS 1175 or STS 202, we'll show you the certificate for that exact model.

Like-for-like is fine too if the old door suited you. We'll measure again either way, because the original door may not have been the best fit for the opening.

How does the replacement survey and fitting work?

Replacement follows a simple sequence: a guide price online, a free survey, a written quote, and a fitting date confirmed in writing.

  1. Use the quote tool for a guide price based on door type and width.
  2. At the free survey we measure the opening, look at how the old door is fixed, and check headroom, side room, the lintel and power.
  3. You get a written quote listing the door, extras, removal and disposal, and anything priced on survey.
  4. Once you accept, the fitting date is confirmed in writing; it depends on installer availability.
  5. On the day the old door comes out, the new one goes in, and a powered door is commissioned and handed over with its paperwork.

You can start with a guide price on our quote page, then book the survey when you're ready.

Questions about roller garage door replacement

Can you replace a roller door made by a different company?

Yes. We replace roller garage doors of any make, and up-and-over doors too. The old door is removed and disposed of as part of the price, so it doesn't matter who made or fitted it. What matters is the opening itself, which we measure afresh at the free survey before quoting.

Can I keep my old roller box and just change the curtain?

Our replacement prices are for a complete new door, because a new curtain needs a barrel, box, guides and controls that are matched to it. If only a few laths are damaged on an otherwise sound door, a lath repair may be the better option, and we'll say so if that's the case.

Will a new insulated door make my garage warm?

Insulated laths reduce heat loss, draughts and noise compared with single-skin laths, so the garage is more comfortable to use. The door still isn't part of the house's insulated envelope, and the walls, roof and floor matter too, so think of it as an improvement rather than turning the garage into a heated room.

Is VAT included in the replacement price?

Yes. Home prices are shown including VAT. Garage doors are standard-rated at 20% and there's no reduced rate for them, so the figure in your written quote is the price you pay, unless you change the specification or further work is agreed with you in writing.

How long will a new roller garage door last?

Lifespan depends on use, exposure and care rather than a fixed number of years. Keeping the guide rails clean, using only the lubricant the manufacturer allows, testing the safety devices monthly and having the door serviced all help. The manufacturer's warranty terms for your door and motor are set out in writing in your quote.
