How much does a roller garage door cost in the UK?

Quick answer

A new roller garage door costs more as the opening gets wider and as you move from a manual single-skin door to an electric, insulated or security-rated model. Our guide prices include VAT and taking away your old door. Colours, smart control, battery backup, keypads and any structural work are extra, and the written quote after a free survey is the final price.

What affects the price of a roller garage door?

The price of a roller garage door depends mainly on the width of the opening, the type of lath, whether it has a motor and whether you choose a security-rated model. The finish, the extras and the condition of the opening then fine-tune the figure.

  • Width. A wider curtain needs more laths, longer guides, a bigger barrel and often a larger lath, so prices step up at about 2.4 m, 3.0 m, 4.0 m and 5.5 m.
  • Lath type. Single-skin aluminium laths cost less than double-skinned laths filled with polyurethane foam. Our guide to insulated and single-skin laths explains the difference.
  • Manual or electric. A tubular motor, control box, safety edge and remotes add cost, but a wide curtain is heavy to lift by hand.
  • Security rating. A manufacturer's model certificated to LPS 1175 or STS 202 uses heavier components and costs more.
  • Finish. The manufacturer's standard colours are included. A RAL colour or woodgrain finish is an extra.
  • Extras. Vision laths, smart control, battery backup, keypads and extra remotes are priced separately.
  • The old door. Our door prices include removing and disposing of an old roller or up-and-over door.
  • Access, electrics and structure. Awkward access, no power near the box, a weak lintel or reveals that need building out all add cost. Structural work is priced on survey.

How much is a new roller garage door by size and type?

A new roller door, supplied and fitted with the old door taken away, ranges from £895–£1,295 inc VAT for a manual single to £3,795–£5,495 inc VAT for a security-rated wide double. These guide ranges include VAT and assume a standard opening with straightforward access.

Steel electric doors are £1,345–£1,995 inc VAT for a single opening and £2,095–£3,095 inc VAT for a double. Steel doors wider than 4 m, openings wider than 5.5 m, bespoke colours outside the range and any structural work are priced on survey. Every figure is also on our price list.

What do extras like colours, remotes and battery backup cost?

Extras are added to the door price one by one, so you only pay for the ones you want.

  • RAL colour or woodgrain finish: £95–£245 inc VAT
  • Vision or vent laths: £145–£345 inc VAT
  • Smart app control: £95–£245 inc VAT
  • Battery backup: £149–£279 inc VAT
  • Wireless keypad: £79–£149 inc VAT
  • Extra remote handset: £39–£69 inc VAT each
  • Fused spur from an existing circuit nearby, fitted by an electrician: £129–£249 inc VAT. A new supply to a garage with no power is priced on survey.

Work on a roller door you already have is booked as a visit, with the price agreed before we come out. A repair visit, covering diagnosis and the first 30 minutes, is £119–£169 inc VAT, and parts are quoted before they're fitted. A service on one door is £89–£139 inc VAT, and a replacement tubular motor, fitted and commissioned, is £395–£695 inc VAT.

Is VAT charged on roller garage doors?

Yes, garage doors are standard-rated for VAT at 20%, and there is no reduced rate for them.

Every home price on this site already includes VAT, so the figure you see is the figure you pay for that item. If another quote shows prices plus VAT, add 20% before you compare. If you're buying for a garage court or a row of lock-ups, ask for the written quote to show each price both with and without VAT so your own records are straightforward.

Why do roller garage door quotes differ so much?

Quotes differ mainly because they price different doors, different amounts of work and different assumptions about your opening.

One quote may be for a single-skin door with one remote, another for a 77 mm insulated lath with battery backup. Some include removing the old door, making good to the reveals and the electrics, while others leave those out and add them later. A price given without anyone measuring may assume the box fits behind the lintel when the opening actually needs a face-fixed box.

Powered doors also differ in what happens after fitting. Commissioning to BS EN 12453, with force testing, a Declaration of Conformity and UKCA or CE marking, takes time and the right test equipment. We commission every powered door we fit to these standards and hand over the paperwork, and that is built into our prices.

How do I compare roller garage door quotes like for like?

Compare quotes like for like by checking that each one names the same door, lath, motor, safety devices and scope of work.

  1. Lath type and size: single-skin or insulated, 55 mm or 77 mm.
  2. Width and height: measured on site, not estimated from a photo.
  3. Fitting position and box size: behind the lintel, between the reveals or face-fixed.
  4. Motor and controls: how many remotes, and whether a keypad or smart control is included.
  5. Safety devices: safety edge, photocells and commissioning paperwork at handover.
  6. Security rating: if one is claimed, the certificate and the exact model it covers.
  7. Removal and disposal of the old door, making good, and any electrics.
  8. Warranty: the manufacturer's warranty terms for the door and motor, set out in writing.
  9. VAT: included or added on top.

Questions

Does the price include taking away my old garage door?

Yes. Our door prices include removing and disposing of an old roller or up-and-over door, standard fixings and making good to the reveals. They don't include structural work such as a new lintel, building out reveals that are too narrow, or new electrics. If the survey finds any of those are needed, they are priced separately and shown in the written quote before you agree to anything.

Why does a security-rated roller door cost more?

A security-rated door is a specific manufacturer's model that has been tested and certificated, usually to LPS 1175 or STS 202. It uses heavier laths, stronger guides and locking features designed to resist attack for a set time, and the testing and certification add cost as well. If you choose one, we'll show you the certificate for the exact model we're quoting.

Can I get an exact price without a survey?

Not for a new door. Our online tool gives a guide range from the width and door type you choose, but the written quote follows a free survey where we measure the opening and check headroom, side room, the lintel, the floor level and the power supply. That's when we can confirm the box size, the fitting position and whether any extra work is needed.

Is a manual roller door much cheaper than an electric one?

A manual single-skin door is the lowest-priced option in our list, and the gap to an electric door grows a little with width. Manual doors are spring-assisted and suit narrower, lighter doors. On wider openings the curtain becomes heavy to lift and lower by hand, which is why our price list doesn't include manual doors wider than 4 m.
