In short

Remote control and keypad upgrades add new ways to operate an electric roller garage door, or make the existing ones secure again. We supply extra rolling-code handsets, recode the receiver when a fob is lost, fit wireless wall keypads, and upgrade to smart or replacement receivers. The visit price is agreed before we come out, and handsets and keypads are priced individually.

  • Extra rolling-code handsets matched and paired to your door's receiver
  • Receiver recoded after a lost or stolen fob, so the missing one stops working
  • Wireless wall keypads for opening the door without a handset
  • Smart or replacement receivers where the existing one isn't compatible

Can you add extra remotes to an electric roller garage door?

Yes, extra remotes can be added to most electric roller doors, as long as the new handsets are compatible with the receiver in your door's control system.

Domestic roller doors use rolling-code remotes, where the code changes each time a button is pressed, which makes the signal much harder to copy. Each handset has to be paired with the receiver, so a handset bought online may simply not work with your door, even if it looks the same.

Tell us the make of the motor or control box, or describe an existing handset and the label on the control box, and we'll confirm what's compatible before the visit is booked. If your receiver is old, or its handsets are no longer made, a replacement receiver lets you use current handsets instead. That is priced as a fitted upgrade, and you'll know the figure before anyone comes out.

What should you do if you lose a garage door remote?

If a remote is lost or stolen, have the receiver recoded so the missing handset no longer opens the door.

Recoding clears the receiver's memory of paired handsets and then adds back only the ones you still have, plus any new ones. Whoever finds the lost fob can't use it to open your garage. It's worth doing after moving into a home with an electric garage door too, because you can't be sure how many handsets the previous owners had or who they lent them to.

Until the visit, you can switch the door off at its isolator when you're away from home, if that suits how you use the garage; the door won't then respond to any handset. If your garage connects to the house, think about that door too. Some insurers ask about garage security, so check with yours if a fob has gone missing.

How much do new remotes, keypads and receiver upgrades cost?

Remote and keypad work is priced as a visit plus the items you choose, and every figure is agreed before we come out.

ItemPrice
Remote or receiver recoding visit£69–£119 inc VAT
Extra remote handset, each£39–£69 inc VAT
Wireless keypad£79–£149 inc VAT
Smart or replacement receiver, fitted£129–£279 inc VAT

The recoding visit covers pairing your handsets to the receiver and testing them. Handsets and keypads are added at the prices above, so if you need two new fobs and a keypad, your confirmation shows the visit and each item. A receiver upgrade is priced fitted. If we find a fault with the motor or safety devices while we're there, it's quoted before anything else is done. All home prices include VAT at 20%.

What is a smart receiver and is it worth fitting?

A smart receiver is a Wi-Fi unit connected to your door's control system that lets you open and close the door from an app on your phone.

It suits households where several people use the garage, or where you'd like to let someone in without handing over a fob. With many systems you can also see whether the door is open or closed. It needs a dependable Wi-Fi signal at the garage, so we'll ask about that before booking. Some control boxes accept a smart receiver directly; older ones may need a replacement receiver first, and we'll tell you which applies.

Because an app lets you operate the door when you can't see it, we only fit a smart receiver to a door that has both a safety edge and photocells, and we re-test them and update the records when we fit it. Anything that needs adding or repairing first is quoted before we start. Our guide to smart garage door control explains the options.

How does a remote or keypad visit work?

A remote or keypad visit follows four steps: you tell us about your door, we confirm the price, the visit is booked, and any further parts are quoted before they're fitted.

  1. Tell us the make of the motor or control box if you know it, how many handsets you need, and whether a fob has been lost.
  2. We confirm the visit price and the cost of the handsets, keypad or receiver.
  3. The visit is booked; the date depends on engineer availability and is confirmed in writing.
  4. On the day, the receiver is recoded, new handsets and keypads are paired and tested, and anything else is quoted before it's fitted.

A wireless keypad is mounted outside, near the door, and opens it with a code you choose. Keep the code private, and change it if you think someone else knows it. You can send your door details through our contact page.

Questions about remote control and keypad upgrades

Can I buy a remote online and code it myself?

Sometimes, but only if the handset is compatible with your receiver, and many aren't. Rolling-code systems need the right handset type and the correct pairing steps from the motor maker. If you'd rather not risk buying the wrong one, tell us the make of your control box and we'll supply matched handsets and pair them during the visit.

Will recoding stop a lost fob from working?

Yes. Recoding clears the receiver's memory of paired handsets and then adds back only the ones you still have, plus any new ones. The lost or stolen fob is no longer recognised, so it can't open the door. It's sensible to do this after moving house as well, when you can't be sure how many handsets exist.

Where is a wireless keypad fitted?

A wireless keypad is usually mounted on the wall outside, close to the garage door and at a comfortable height, so you can open the door without a handset. It communicates with the receiver without a cable to the control box. You choose the code, and you can change it later if you need to.

Does a smart receiver work with any electric roller door?

Not always. Some control boxes accept a smart receiver directly, while older or less common systems need a replacement receiver first. It also needs a dependable Wi-Fi signal at the garage. Tell us what control box you have and we'll confirm what's compatible, and the price, before the visit is booked.

Can you add a remote to a manual roller door?

Not on its own. A manual door has no motor or receiver for a remote to talk to, because springs in the barrel balance the curtain and you lift it by hand. To operate it by remote, the door first needs a manual-to-electric conversion, which is only possible when the curtain, barrel, box and guides are sound and compatible.
