Smart roller garage doors
A smart roller garage door is an electric roller door fitted with a Wi-Fi receiver, so you can open and close it from an app on your phone as well as with the usual remote fobs. Depending on the receiver, the app may also show whether the door is open or closed. We only enable app control on doors with both a safety edge and photocells, re-tested when the receiver is fitted.

- Needs a reliable Wi-Fi signal where the receiver is fitted
- Safety edge and photocells still protect the opening
What can a smart roller garage door do?
A smart roller garage door lets you open and close it from an app on your phone, and depending on the receiver it may also show whether the door is open or closed.
That's useful in a few everyday situations. You can let a family member into the garage without handing over a fob, check from the house whether you closed the door, or open it as you arrive without hunting for the remote. The remote fobs, and any keypad or key switch you have, still work as normal, so the app is an extra way in, not a replacement.
Exactly which features you get depends on the smart receiver the door uses, so check the details listed in your quote. A smart receiver needs an electric door. If your current door is manual, our page on electric roller garage doors explains the starting point.
Does a smart garage door need Wi-Fi in the garage?
Yes, a smart garage door needs a reliable Wi-Fi signal where the receiver is fitted, which is usually near the control box inside the garage.
Garages are often at the edge of a home's Wi-Fi range, especially detached garages or integral garages behind thick walls. Before you order, stand by the top of the garage opening with your phone and check the signal. If it drops out or is very weak, the app may not respond reliably.
If the signal is poor, a Wi-Fi extender or mesh point closer to the garage may help, though that's part of your home network rather than the door. We check the signal at survey and tell you if we think it will be a problem. Our guide to smart garage door control explains the options, including what happens if your internet goes down. Your fobs keep working either way, because they talk to the door directly.
Is it safe to open a garage door from my phone?
It can be, provided the door is set up for it: we only enable app control where the door has both a safety edge and photocells, and the commissioning and risk assessment cover operating it out of sight.
When we add app control we re-test the safety devices and update the records. Keep the app and your phone secure, and only close the door remotely when the app confirms its status.
The door's safety edge and photocells still work when you use the app, so the door will stop or reverse if it meets an obstruction. They're a backstop, though, not a reason to close a door you can't see. If children, pets or bikes are often near the garage, be particularly careful about closing it remotely, and keep testing the safety devices every month.
On security, treat the app like any other account that controls access to your home:
- use a strong, unique password
- keep your phone locked
- remove access for anyone who no longer needs it
- install app updates when they're offered
Some insurers ask about garage security, so it's worth checking whether yours has a view on smart access.
How much does a smart roller garage door cost?
Smart app control adds £95–£245 inc VAT to a new electric roller door, on top of the door price for your width band.
For example, an insulated electric door for an opening up to 2.4 m wide costs £1,495–£2,295 inc VAT, including supply, fitting, commissioning and taking away your old door, with VAT at 20%. Add smart control and you have the total for a smart insulated door. Other electric doors in our price list can take smart control too.
Extras that pair well with smart control include:
- Battery backup, so the door keeps working in a power cut: £149–£279 inc VAT
- Wireless keypad: £79–£149 inc VAT
- Fused spur from an existing circuit nearby: £129–£249 inc VAT
If you already have an electric roller door, a smart receiver can often be added on a visit, priced at £129–£279 inc VAT fitted and agreed before we come out.
What happens at the survey and on fitting day for a smart door?
At the free survey we check the Wi-Fi signal and power supply as well as the opening, and on fitting day we set up the app with you once the door is commissioned.
The surveyor measures the width, height, headroom and side room, checks the lintel and floor, and looks at where the control box and receiver will go. We test the Wi-Fi signal at that spot. Your written quote lists the door, the smart receiver and any extras, and once you accept it the fitting date is confirmed in writing, depending on installer availability.
On the day, the old door is removed and the new door and motor are installed and commissioned, with limits set, closing force tested and safety devices checked. The installer then connects the receiver to your Wi-Fi, helps you set up the app on your phone and pairs the remote fobs. Have your Wi-Fi password ready.

Questions about smart roller garage doors
What happens to a smart garage door if the Wi-Fi goes down?
The app may stop responding until the Wi-Fi or internet connection comes back, but the door itself keeps working. Your remote fobs talk to the door directly, and any keypad or key switch works as normal. The door doesn't rely on the internet to open and close, only to take instructions from the app.
Can several people control the door from their phones?
Usually, yes, though how access is shared depends on the app and receiver your door uses. It's worth keeping a list of who has access, and removing anyone who no longer needs it, in the same way you'd keep track of keys and fobs. Ask about sharing at the survey if it matters to you.
Can I add smart control to my existing roller garage door?
If your door is already electric, a smart receiver can often be added on a visit, with the price agreed before we come out. The motor and control box need to be compatible, which we check first. If your door is manual, it would need converting to electric before smart control could be added, and that depends on its condition.
Does a smart garage door work with voice assistants?
Some smart receivers can link to voice assistants or home automation systems, but it varies from one receiver to another. If that matters to you, tell us at the survey and we'll confirm what the receiver for your door supports before you order. Think carefully before allowing voice commands to open the door, for security.
Do I still get remote fobs with a smart door?
Yes. A smart door comes with rolling-code remote fobs as well as app control, so you have a way to operate it without your phone. Extra handsets can be added to your order, and a wireless keypad is useful for anyone without a fob or a phone to hand. Keep the manual override handle somewhere easy to find, too.
