Coloured and woodgrain roller garage doors

A coloured roller garage door is a roller door finished in a colour you choose rather than one of the manufacturer's standard range finishes, usually picked from the RAL colour system. What colours can I have on a roller garage door?

You can have one of the manufacturer's standard range finishes at no extra cost, a RAL colour or a woodgrain effect as a priced extra, or a colour outside the range priced on survey.

Standard finishes are the colours the manufacturer offers as its normal range for that door. They're included in the door price. RAL is a system that gives each colour a code, which makes it the most reliable way to ask for an exact shade.

Woodgrain finishes give the laths a wood-effect look, which can suit a home with timber-effect windows or a traditional front door. Our guide to roller garage door colours and finishes explains the options in more detail. If you want a colour the manufacturer doesn't list, tell us at the start so we can check it and price it on survey.

How do I match my garage door colour to my windows?

The most reliable way to match your windows is to find their RAL code, which is often on the paperwork from when they were fitted.

If you don't have the code, avoid choosing from a screen or a printed chart alone, because colours look different on every display and in different light. Comparing a physical sample against your windows in daylight gives you a much better idea. Bear in mind that a garage door is a large flat area, so a colour can look a shade darker or lighter on it than on a narrow window frame.

You don't have to match exactly. Some homes look better with a garage door that complements the windows rather than copying them, such as a darker shade on a light house. Woodgrain effects vary in tone too, so if you're matching timber-effect windows or a composite front door, compare the actual finishes side by side before you decide.

How much does a coloured or woodgrain roller door cost?

A RAL colour or woodgrain finish adds £95–£245 inc VAT to the price of a new roller garage door.

That extra sits on top of the door price for your width band. For example, an insulated electric door for a single opening up to 2.4 m wide costs £1,495–£2,295 inc VAT, and a manual single-skin door for the same opening costs £895–£1,295 inc VAT. Every door price includes supply, fitting and the removal of your old roller or up-and-over door, with VAT at 20%. You can compare all the bands on our prices page.

Colours outside the manufacturer's range are priced on survey, because they depend on what the manufacturer can produce. The written quote states the colour by name or RAL code, so there's no doubt about what's being ordered.

Do I need permission to change my garage door colour?

Usually you don't, but covenants on some newer estates, planning conditions, and rules for listed buildings or conservation areas can restrict the colour or style of a garage door.

Some newer developments have covenants in the deeds about changes to the front of the house, which can cover colours, often for a period after the homes are built. Check your deeds, or ask your conveyancer or the estate's management company if you're unsure.

If your home is listed or in a conservation area, speak to your local planning authority before choosing a colour that differs noticeably from what's there now. The same applies if your planning permission included conditions about materials or finishes. Our guide to planning and building regulations sets out the questions to ask. It's your responsibility to check, but we're happy to talk through any restrictions you find at the survey.

What happens at the survey and on fitting day for a coloured door?

At the free survey we confirm the colour or woodgrain you want alongside the measurements, and on fitting day you can check the finish before the installer starts.

The surveyor measures the width, height, headroom and side room, and checks the lintel, floor and power supply. Have your RAL code or window paperwork ready, and say whether you want the guides and box in the same finish as the curtain. Your written quote records the finish exactly, and once you accept it, the fitting date is confirmed in writing, depending on installer availability.

When the door arrives on fitting day, take a moment to look at the finish against your windows before the old door comes out. The installer then removes and takes away the old door, fits the new one and, for an electric door, commissions it. Follow the manufacturer's care guidance for the finish, which comes with the door.

Questions about coloured and woodgrain roller garage doors

Can I have different colours on the inside and outside of the door?

That depends on what the manufacturer offers for the door you choose, because the finish options for the inside face of the curtain vary from one model to another. Tell us at the survey if the inside colour matters to you, for example on an integral garage you use as a utility space, and we'll confirm it in writing.

Does a woodgrain roller door need treating like real timber?

No. A woodgrain finish is a wood effect on aluminium or steel laths, so it doesn't need staining, oiling or varnishing like timber. Clean it as the manufacturer recommends and keep the guide rails free of debris. Manufacturer's warranty terms for the door and its finish are set out in writing in your quote.

Can I paint my existing roller garage door a new colour?

We supply new doors in the finish you choose rather than repainting existing doors. Painting a roller curtain yourself could affect how the laths coil and run in the guides, and may affect the manufacturer's warranty terms. If your door is tired and you want a new colour, a replacement door in your chosen finish is the reliable route.

Will the guide rails and box match the door colour?

It's worth asking at the survey. On most fittings the box sits inside the garage, but the guide rails can be visible from outside, and a face-fitted box is fully on show. Finish options for the guides and box depend on the door model, so tell us what you'd like and the quote will state exactly what's included.

Can I see a colour sample before ordering?

It's sensible to see a physical sample where one is available, because screens and printed charts don't show colours accurately. Ask about samples when you book your survey. If you already have a RAL code from your windows or front door, that code is the most precise way to tell us the colour you want.
