Aluminium roller garage doors

An aluminium roller garage door is a curtain of horizontal aluminium laths that coils onto a barrel inside a box above the opening and runs up and down in two side guide rails. You can have single-skin laths, which are lighter and cheaper, or double-skinned laths filled with insulating foam. The door needs no ceiling space and never swings out over the drive.

  • Single-skin or foam-filled insulated aluminium laths
  • Coils into a box above the opening, so no ceiling tracks
  • Spring-assisted manual or electric tubular-motor operation
  • Removal and disposal of your old door included in the price

What is the difference between single-skin and insulated aluminium laths?

Single-skin laths are a single layer of roll-formed aluminium, while insulated laths are two aluminium skins with polyurethane foam filling the space between them.

Single-skin is the lighter and lower-cost option. It keeps the weather out of a garage used for parking, bikes and general storage, but it does very little to hold heat in, so the garage will stay close to the outside temperature through the year.

Insulated laths reduce heat loss, draughts and noise compared with single-skin. They usually come in lath heights of around 55 mm or 77 mm, and the larger lath adds rigidity on wider doors. Even so, a garage door isn't part of your home's insulated envelope, so we don't put a number on the heat you'll save. Our guide to insulated and single-skin laths compares the two side by side, including how each affects the size of the box.

Should I choose an aluminium or a steel roller garage door?

Aluminium is the usual material for a domestic roller door, and steel is the one to weigh up if you want a heavier, more rigid curtain.

Aluminium laths are light enough to work as a spring-assisted manual door on narrower openings, and they come in both single-skin and foam-filled insulated versions. That gives you the widest choice of price, operation and width, from a small single garage up to a wide double opening of about 5.5 m.

Steel laths make a heavier door, so the steel doors we price are electric. They cover openings up to 4 m wide, and wider steel doors are priced on survey. If steel appeals, our steel roller garage doors page sets out the options and the checks a heavier curtain needs.

Neither material makes a door security-rated on its own. Ratings such as LPS 1175 belong to specific manufacturer models, whatever they're made from, so ask to see the certificate if security is part of your decision.

How much does an aluminium roller garage door cost?

For a single opening up to 2.4 m wide, an aluminium roller door costs £895–£1,295 inc VAT as a manual single-skin door, £1,195–£1,745 inc VAT as an electric single-skin door, or £1,495–£2,295 inc VAT as an insulated electric door.

Each price covers supplying and fitting the door, plus taking away and disposing of your old roller or up-and-over door. VAT is included at the standard 20% rate, because garage doors don't qualify for a reduced rate.

Wider openings move up a width band, and you can see every band on our prices page. A RAL colour or woodgrain finish adds £95–£245 inc VAT. If an electric door has no socket near the box, a fused spur from an existing circuit, fitted by an electrician, adds £129–£249 inc VAT. Structural work, such as a new lintel, is priced on survey and shown separately in your written quote, so you can see exactly what it adds to the door price.

What happens at the survey and on fitting day for an aluminium door?

The free survey settles which lath, box and fitting position suit your opening, and fitting day is when the old door comes out and the new one goes in.

At the survey we measure the width and height of the opening, the headroom above it for the box, and the side room for the guide rails, which is typically around 75 to 100 mm each side. We also look at the lintel, the floor level, access to the garage and, for an electric door, where the power will come from. You then get a written quote, and once you accept it the fitting date is confirmed in writing, depending on installer availability.

On the day, the installer removes your old door, fixes the box and guide rails, and hangs the curtain. An electric door is then commissioned: the open and closed limits are set, the safety devices are tested, and you're shown how the manual override works before you sign off.

How do I look after an aluminium roller garage door?

An aluminium roller door needs very little care beyond clean guide rails, the right lubricant and a regular check of its safety devices.

  • Keep the guide rails clear of leaves, grit and debris so the curtain runs smoothly.
  • Don't oil the guides unless the manufacturer says to, as many doors should only have a dry or silicone lubricant.
  • On an electric door, test the safety edge or photocells once a month.
  • Keep the override handle somewhere you can find it quickly in a power cut.

If the door starts to catch, scrape or run unevenly, stop using it rather than forcing it, because a small problem can turn into damaged laths or guides. A repair visit is priced and agreed before anyone comes out. The manufacturer's warranty terms for your door and motor are set out in writing in your quote, so keep that with your house documents.

Questions about aluminium roller garage doors

Can a manual aluminium roller door be made electric later?

Sometimes. A manual door can be converted to electric only if its curtain, barrel, box and guide rails are sound and compatible with a motor. If they aren't, we'll tell you at survey and price a new door instead. If you expect to want electric operation within a few years, it's usually simpler to choose it from the start.

How much room does an aluminium roller door take up inside the garage?

Very little. The curtain coils onto a barrel in a box at the top of the opening, so there are no ceiling tracks and nothing hangs across the roof space. You lose some height at the top for the box and a narrow strip at each side for the guide rails, both of which we measure at survey.

Can I park right up to an aluminium roller door?

Yes. The curtain rises straight up into the box instead of tilting outwards like an up-and-over door, so you can park close to the opening and still open it fully. That is handy on a short drive, because nothing swings out over the space in front of the garage while the door is moving.

Is single-skin aluminium enough for my garage?

It depends on how you use the space. For parking, bikes and garden tools, single-skin laths are often all you need. If you use the garage as a workshop, gym or utility area, or it sits beside or below living space, insulated laths reduce heat loss, draughts and noise and are worth the extra cost.

Can an aluminium roller door replace an up-and-over door?

Yes. We remove the old up-and-over door and its frame, or keep the frame if it's sound, then check the lintel and reveals before fitting the box behind the lintel and the guides to the reveals. Without swing-out arms you may gain a little clear width. Extra work, such as a new lintel or building out the reveals, is priced on survey.
