What should I know about double and wide roller garage doors in Dorchester?

Make sure there's a clear route from the road to the garage, because a curtain for a wide opening is long and awkward to carry.
Look along the lintel for cracks or sagging, because a wide door's box is fixed along its full length.
Think about electric operation for any opening over 4 m, since the wide doubles in our price list are all electric.
Allow extra headroom for a wide door, since larger laths make a bigger roll and need a deeper box.

Rules that apply in Dorchester

Structural work

Widening the opening, removing a central pier or fitting a new lintel is structural work that needs Building Regulations approval from building control before it starts.

Planning

Replacing a garage door is not usually development that needs planning permission. Check first if your home is listed (listed building consent covers works that affect its character), sits in a conservation area with an Article 4 direction, or is on an estate where planning conditions or covenants control garage doors.

Double and wide roller garage doors in Dorchester: questions

What do you check at a survey in DT1?

At a survey in DT1 we measure the width and height of the opening, the headroom above it for the roller box, the side room for the guide rails and the floor level. We also look at the lintel and where power can come from for an electric door.

Do I need permission for a new roller garage door in Dorchester?

Replacing a garage door is not usually development that needs planning permission in England, and widening the opening needs building control approval. If you live in a listed building, a conservation area or on an estate with covenants or planning conditions, check before ordering.

Do you charge more for Dorchester than other towns in Dorset?

No. Guide prices are the same for Dorchester as for anywhere else we cover in Dorset. The written quote reflects your opening and the door you choose, not your postcode, apart from islands and remote areas where any travel cost is shown in advance.

How much do double and wide roller garage doors cost in Dorchester?

Our guide price for double and wide roller garage doors is from £1,395 inc VAT. The figure for your garage depends on the opening size, the door specification and any extras, and is confirmed in a written quote after a free survey. The guide prices are the same in Dorchester as elsewhere we cover.

What if my garage opening is wider than 5.5 m?

We price it on survey. Openings over 5.5 m fall outside our standard price bands, because the door, the lintel and the fixing points need to be checked and specified individually. You can still use the online tool to tell us about the opening, and we'll arrange a free survey and give you a written quote.

Do I need permission to turn two garage openings into one?

Removing a pier and fitting a longer lintel is structural work, and it may need Building Regulations approval. Whether planning permission is needed depends on your property, so check with your local authority, especially for listed buildings or homes in a conservation area. Our guide to planning and building regulations covers the questions to ask.
