Roller garage doors for rural outbuildings
A rural outbuilding is a garage, store or converted farm building at a country home, often some distance from the house and sometimes with a wide opening. A roller garage door suits it because the curtain coils into a box above the opening, leaving the roof space and floor clear. The questions to settle are width, the power supply and whether a manual door makes more sense.
Computer-generated imageCan you fit roller doors on rural outbuildings?
Yes, we fit roller doors on outbuildings used as garages or stores at rural homes, provided the opening can take a box above it and guide rails either side. Stone, brick, block and some timber-framed buildings can all be suitable, but the fixings depend on what the structure is made of and its condition.
Older outbuildings often have timber beams instead of lintels, uneven floors or openings that aren't square. We check all of this at the free survey for a new door, and any work to make the opening suitable is priced on survey and shown in your written quote. We cover England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland; islands and remote areas are arranged individually, with any travel cost shown in the quote before anything is agreed.
How wide can a roller door be on an outbuilding?
Our price bands cover openings up to 5.5 m wide, and wider openings are priced on survey. For an opening 4.0 to 5.5 m wide, an electric single-skin door is £2,195–£3,195 inc VAT, supplied and fitted with removal and disposal of an old roller or up-and-over door.
Wide doors use larger laths, often around 77 mm, for rigidity, and a bigger box that needs more headroom. The beam or lintel above the opening must be able to carry the box. Steel doors wider than 4 m are priced on survey. If an opening is very wide, two doors with a central post may work better, and our wide and double doors guide explains the options.
How do you get power to a door far from the house?
An electric door needs a power supply near its box, and for an outbuilding away from the house that usually means a qualified electrician running a supply from the house or another building that has one. The cost depends on the distance, the route and the ground it crosses, so it's priced on survey.
If the outbuilding already has power, a fused spur near the box is usually all that's needed, at £129–£249 inc VAT when added to a new door. In England and Wales some domestic electrical work is notifiable under Part P, which the electrician handles. If a supply isn't practical, a manual door is the alternative.
Should I choose a manual roller door for an outbuilding?
A manual roller door is a good choice for a narrower outbuilding opening without power. A spring-assisted manual door has springs in the barrel that balance the curtain, so it lifts by hand, and it can be secured with a bottom-rail lock. For an opening up to 2.4 m wide, a manual single-skin door is £895–£1,295 inc VAT.
Manual doors are best for narrower, lighter doors. On a wide or heavy door, electric operation is much easier day to day. If you fit a manual door now and add power later, a manual-to-electric conversion is possible only when the curtain, barrel, box and guides are sound and compatible.
Can a roller door on an outbuilding run on solar power?
We don't promise solar-powered operation for roller garage doors, because whether it would work reliably depends on the door, the motor and the site. The options we quote are a mains-powered electric door or a manual door, so please don't plan an electric door for an outbuilding on the basis that it can run without a mains supply.
A battery backup unit is sometimes mistaken for an off-grid option. It isn't: it keeps a mains-powered door working for a limited number of cycles during a power cut, then recharges when the power returns. If running power to the outbuilding isn't practical, a manual roller door is the dependable choice.
Questions
Do you cover remote rural addresses?
Yes. We cover England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Islands and remote areas are arranged individually, and any travel cost is shown in your written quote before anything is agreed. Survey and fitting dates depend on installer availability and are confirmed in writing, so let us know about access, such as farm tracks or gates, when you get in touch.
Will a roller door keep out rain and animals?
It closes the opening well but isn't completely sealed. Brush seals in the guide rails and a seal along the bottom rail close the main gaps, which helps keep out rain, leaves and small animals. An uneven floor leaves gaps under the bottom rail, and levelling it or adding a threshold is priced on survey. Keeping the seals in good condition helps too.
Can battery backup replace a mains supply?
No. A battery backup unit runs a mains-powered electric door for a limited number of cycles during a power cut, then recharges once power returns. It isn't designed to power a door on its own. If there's no practical way to get mains power to the outbuilding, a manual roller door is the better choice.
