What should I know about manual roller garage doors in the Highlands, Moray and Islands?
- Check whether the garage has power, because a manual door needs none, while converting to electric later would need a supply near the box.
- Ask how the bottom-rail lock works and where the keys will be kept, since the lock is what secures a closed manual door.
- Measure the headroom above the opening, as the coiled curtain still needs a box at the top even without a motor.
- If the door is for a lock-up or garage court, list each opening separately, as every door is measured and priced for its own opening.

Rules that apply in Scotland
Planning
Replacing a garage door is not usually development that needs planning permission in Scotland. Listed building consent applies to listed buildings, and conservation-area controls, planning conditions or title conditions can restrict changes to how a garage looks, so check before ordering.
Powered door safety
Every powered door we fit is commissioned with force testing to BS EN 12453 and handed over with a Declaration of Conformity and UKCA or CE marking, as the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008 require.
Questions about manual roller garage doors in the Highlands, Moray and Islands
How do I book a survey in the Highlands, Moray and Islands?
Start with the guide price tool or the form on this page. We then contact you to arrange a free survey for a new door, replacement or conversion, and confirm the date in writing. Travel to Fort William, Stornoway, Kirkwall, Thurso, Wick, Lerwick and Portree is priced individually and confirmed in writing before booking.
Are guide prices the same across the Highlands, Moray and Islands?
Yes for the door and visit prices. Travel to Fort William, Stornoway, Kirkwall, Thurso, Wick, Lerwick and Portree is priced individually and shown in writing before you agree to anything.
Can I get a price without anyone visiting?
Yes. The guide price tool takes four steps and gives a range for your opening and door type, or the visit price for a repair. It is a guide, not a quote: the written quote comes after the survey or once the visit price is agreed.
Can a manual roller door be converted to electric later?
Only if the existing door is right for it. A manual-to-electric conversion needs the curtain, barrel, box and guides to be sound and compatible with a tubular motor, and a power supply has to be added near the box. We check all of this at a free survey. If the door isn't suitable, we'll tell you plainly and price a new electric door.
Can I fit a manual roller door to a garage with no electricity?
Yes, and that's one of its main advantages. A manual door needs no motor, no control box and no power supply, so it suits detached garages, lock-ups and outbuildings without electrics. If you want an electric door there later, a qualified electrician would need to provide a fused spur, which adds cost and depends on getting a supply to the garage.
