Rules that apply in England
Electrics
An electric door needs a power supply near the roller box. Electrical work must meet BS 7671, and in England some domestic electrical work is notifiable under Part P, so it is done by a registered competent person or signed off by building control.
Powered door safety
Every powered door we fit is commissioned with force testing to BS EN 12453 and handed over with a Declaration of Conformity and UKCA or CE marking, as the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008 require.
Questions about manual to electric roller door conversion in East Sussex
Can I get a price without anyone visiting?
Yes. The guide price tool takes four steps and gives a range for your opening and door type, or the visit price for a repair. It is a guide, not a quote: the written quote comes after the survey or once the visit price is agreed.
Are guide prices the same across East Sussex?
Yes. The guide prices are the same in every town in East Sussex. The written quote reflects your opening and the door you choose, not your postcode.
Do I need permission for a new roller garage door in East Sussex?
Replacing a garage door is not usually development that needs planning permission in England, and widening the opening needs building control approval. If you live in a listed building, a conservation area or on an estate with covenants or planning conditions, check before ordering.
What safety devices are added to a converted door?
A converted door gets a pressure-sensitive safety edge on the bottom rail and, where the risk assessment calls for them, photocells across the opening. These stop or reverse the door if it touches or detects an obstruction. After fitting, the closing force is tested to BS EN 12453, and you receive a Declaration of Conformity along with the rest of the handover paperwork.
Will I still be able to open the door by hand?
Not in the way you do now, because the motor holds the curtain in place. Most electric roller doors have a manual override, usually an internal crank or winding handle, for use in a power cut. A battery backup unit can also be added so the door runs for a limited number of cycles when the power is off.
