Replacing a garage door is not usually development that needs planning permission in England, and widening the opening needs building control approval. If you live in a listed building, a conservation area or on an estate with covenants or planning conditions, check before ordering.

At a survey in PO19 we measure the width and height of the opening, the headroom above it for the roller box, the side room for the guide rails and the floor level. We also look at the lintel and where power can come from for an electric door.

Most single domestic roller doors are fitted in a day once the door has been made, including removing the old door. Wider doors, conversions that need building work and jobs where power has to be run can take longer; the quote says what to expect.

Our standard steel price list covers single openings up to 2.4 m and doubles of 3.0 to 4.0 m; other widths are priced on survey. A wider steel door needs the opening, lintel and fixing points checked individually before the right door can be specified, so we price it after the survey rather than from a table. For openings up to about 5.5 m, insulated aluminium doors have a set price band you can see online.

The steel doors in our price list are electric, because a steel curtain is heavier than an aluminium one and the tubular motor does the lifting. If you want a hand-operated door, our manual doors use single-skin aluminium laths. Where there's no socket near the box, a qualified electrician can fit a fused spur from an existing circuit, shown as a separate line in your quote; a new supply to a garage with no power is priced on survey.
