What should I know about up-and-over to roller door conversion in Berkshire?
- Clear width can improve slightly after a conversion, because there are no swing-out arms at the sides of the opening.
- Taking out the up-and-over tracks frees the garage ceiling for shelving, storage or better lighting.
- We check the lintel and reveals at the survey, and price a new lintel or building out the reveals before you agree.
- An up-and-over frame is kept only if it is sound and square; otherwise it comes out and the opening is prepared.

Rules that apply in England
Structural work
Widening the opening, removing a central pier or fitting a new lintel is structural work that needs Building Regulations approval from building control before it starts.
Planning
Replacing a garage door is not usually development that needs planning permission. Check first if your home is listed (listed building consent covers works that affect its character), sits in a conservation area with an Article 4 direction, or is on an estate where planning conditions or covenants control garage doors.
Questions about up-and-over to roller door conversion in Berkshire
How do I book a survey in Berkshire?
Start with the guide price tool or the form on this page. We then contact you to arrange a free survey for a new door, replacement or conversion, and confirm the date in writing.
Are guide prices the same across Berkshire?
Yes. The guide prices are the same in every town in Berkshire. The written quote reflects your opening and the door you choose, not your postcode.
Which towns do you cover in Berkshire?
We cover Berkshire, including Reading, Slough, Bracknell and Maidenhead. Every town has its own page with local details, and you can start a guide price for any postcode in Berkshire online.
Will I lose height in the opening with a roller door?
Not usually, if the box can sit behind the lintel inside the garage, which is the normal position. If there's too little headroom inside, the box can go under the lintel, which does reduce the clear opening height, or be face-fixed on the front of the wall. We measure this at the survey and tell you before you commit.
Does a roller door need more headroom than an up-and-over?
A roller door needs headroom above the opening for its box, while an up-and-over needs space inside the garage for its tracks and for the panel when it's open. Domestic roller boxes are commonly around 205 to 300 mm or more, depending on door height and lath size. If there isn't room behind the lintel, other box positions are possible.
