What should I know about made-to-measure roller garage doors in Merthyr Tydfil?

Note any piers, downpipes or meter boxes outside the opening that could affect a face-fixed door or box.
Read the sizes, fitting position and box position in your written quote carefully, because that's what the door will be made to.
Measure the width at the top, middle and bottom of the opening, because older garages are often slightly out of square.
Check the height at both sides and in the middle, since an uneven floor can make one side of the opening taller than the other.

How does it work in Merthyr Tydfil?

When you accept the quote, the door is ordered to those sizes and your fitting date is confirmed in writing. The date depends on installer availability.

Rules that apply in Merthyr Tydfil

Structural work

Widening the opening, removing a central pier or fitting a new lintel is structural work that needs Building Regulations approval from building control in Wales before it starts.

Planning

Replacing a garage door is not usually development that needs planning permission in Wales. Check first if your home is listed (listed building consent covers works that affect its character), is in a conservation area with an Article 4 direction, or is on an estate where planning conditions or covenants control garage doors.

Made-to-measure roller garage doors in Merthyr Tydfil: questions

What do you check at a survey in CF47?

At a survey in CF47 we measure the width and height of the opening, the headroom above it for the roller box, the side room for the guide rails and the floor level. We also look at the lintel and where power can come from for an electric door.

How long does it take to fit a roller garage door in Merthyr Tydfil?

Most single domestic roller doors are fitted in a day once the door has been made, including removing the old door. Wider doors, conversions that need building work and jobs where power has to be run can take longer; the quote says what to expect.

Do I need permission for a new roller garage door in Merthyr Tydfil?

Replacing a garage door is not usually development that needs planning permission in Wales, and widening the opening needs building control approval. If you live in a listed building, a conservation area or on an estate with covenants or planning conditions, check before ordering.

Is an electric roller door worth it for a garage in Merthyr Tydfil?

That depends on how often you use the garage. An electric door opens from the car with a remote and has safety devices fitted, while a manual door costs less and suits occasional use. We price both for your Merthyr Tydfil garage so you can compare.

Can I choose the finish and extras on a made-to-measure door?

Yes. Alongside the sizes, you can choose the lath type, a RAL colour or woodgrain finish, vision or vent laths, and for electric doors extras such as a wireless keypad, smart app control or battery backup. Each choice is written into your quote with its price, so the door that's ordered matches exactly what you agreed.

Why might my measurements differ from the surveyor's?

Openings are rarely perfectly square, so width and height often vary by a few millimetres from one point to another. The surveyor measures at several points, checks the floor level and works to the figures the door must fit. Small differences from your own measurements are normal, and the written quote is based on the survey.
