What should I know about double and wide roller garage doors in Merthyr Tydfil?

Allow extra headroom for a wide door, since larger laths make a bigger roll and need a deeper box.
Think about electric operation for any opening over 4 m, since the wide doubles in our price list are all electric.
Measure the width of your opening at the top, middle and bottom, and use the narrowest figure for your guide price.
Look along the lintel for cracks or sagging, because a wide door's box is fixed along its full length.

Rules that apply in Merthyr Tydfil

Structural work

Widening the opening, removing a central pier or fitting a new lintel is structural work that needs Building Regulations approval from building control in Wales before it starts.

Planning

Replacing a garage door is not usually development that needs planning permission in Wales. Check first if your home is listed (listed building consent covers works that affect its character), is in a conservation area with an Article 4 direction, or is on an estate where planning conditions or covenants control garage doors.

Double and wide roller garage doors in Merthyr Tydfil: questions

Can I message you a photo of my garage in Merthyr Tydfil?

Yes. Photos of the opening, the inside of the garage above the door and any existing door help us give a more useful guide price for Merthyr Tydfil. Send them by WhatsApp or mention them in your enquiry, and we will reply in writing.

Is an electric roller door worth it for a garage in Merthyr Tydfil?

That depends on how often you use the garage. An electric door opens from the car with a remote and has safety devices fitted, while a manual door costs less and suits occasional use. We price both for your Merthyr Tydfil garage so you can compare.

Do you charge more for Merthyr Tydfil than other towns in Mid Glamorgan?

No. Guide prices are the same for Merthyr Tydfil as for anywhere else we cover in Mid Glamorgan. The written quote reflects your opening and the door you choose, not your postcode, apart from islands and remote areas where any travel cost is shown in advance.

Can you remove my old garage door in Merthyr Tydfil?

Yes. Every door price includes removing and disposing of an old roller or up-and-over door at your Merthyr Tydfil address, along with standard fixings and making good to the reveals. If the frame or lintel needs work, we price it at the survey before you agree.

Do I need permission to turn two garage openings into one?

Removing a pier and fitting a longer lintel is structural work, and it may need Building Regulations approval. Whether planning permission is needed depends on your property, so check with your local authority, especially for listed buildings or homes in a conservation area. Our guide to planning and building regulations covers the questions to ask.

Will a roller door give me more width than my double up-and-over door?

Possibly a little. An up-and-over door has a frame and swing-out arms at the sides, and a roller door doesn't, so converting can improve the clear width slightly. The guide rails still need some side room at each end. We measure the clear width you'd get at survey, so you know before ordering.
