What should I know about safety edge and photocell repairs in Tyne and Wear?

  • Replacement safety edges and photocell pairs have fitted prices, agreed before the visit is booked.
  • Photocells can often be added to doors that only have a safety edge, if the control box allows it.
  • After a repair, the door is tested to check it stops or reverses on obstruction before it's handed back.
  • A pressure-sensitive safety edge on the bottom rail stops or reverses the door when it touches something while closing.

Rules that apply in England

Powered door safety

Every powered door we fit is commissioned with force testing to BS EN 12453 and handed over with a Declaration of Conformity and UKCA or CE marking, as the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008 require.

Electrics

An electric door needs a power supply near the roller box. Electrical work must meet BS 7671, and in England some domestic electrical work is notifiable under Part P, so it is done by a registered competent person or signed off by building control.

Questions about safety edge and photocell repairs in Tyne and Wear

Are guide prices the same across Tyne and Wear?

Yes. The guide prices are the same in every town in Tyne and Wear. The written quote reflects your opening and the door you choose, not your postcode.

Which towns do you cover in Tyne and Wear?

We cover Tyne and Wear, including Newcastle upon Tyne, Sunderland, South Shields and Gateshead. Every town has its own page with local details, and you can start a guide price for any postcode in Tyne and Wear online.

Can I get a price without anyone visiting?

Yes. The guide price tool takes four steps and gives a range for your opening and door type, or the visit price for a repair. It is a guide, not a quote: the written quote comes after the survey or once the visit price is agreed.

Can I bypass the photocells to get the door shut?

No. Bypassing, bridging or taping over a safety device removes the protection that stops the door closing onto a person, pet or car. If the door won't close, switch it off at the isolator, keep the area clear and request a visit. Tell us if you're concerned about security when you get in touch.

How do I test my safety edge and photocells?

Follow the manufacturer's instructions for your door. In general, the test checks that the door stops or reverses when the safety edge meets an obstruction while closing, and that the door won't close while the photocell beam is broken. Keep people and pets clear while testing, and repeat the test monthly.
